Typically, service members move about once every three years. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders often require moves across the US or to foreign countries.

The Department of Defense (DOD) understands the burden placed on service members and their families and goes to great lengths to help families move their personal items. Superficially this encompasses everything a family needs when moving, but those who have experienced a PCS move know that relocation costs present the most frustration when moving.

Service members must set up new telecommunications services, eat a few meals without their cookware, and transport necessary items that they cannot live without for a few days.

Army And Air Force Exchange Service

The organization that helps fill these needs is one of the most familiar sights on base. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) provides tax free goods at many US military installations. The exchanges were founded on individual bases over one hundred years ago, and eventually unified as an agency of the DOD. Though the Navy and Marine Corps operate their own exchanges, all offer similar services and accept competitors’ and manufacturers’ coupons, match the prices of other retailers, and some overseas locations honor coupons up to six months after their expiration dates.

In the past, services members were given an AAFES coupon book when they checked in to a new duty station. Members can now print region specific coupons from the AAFES website. These coupons offer discounts at AAFES partner restaurants, savings on telecom services, lower prices on household items, and more.
